Reckon Fred’d take a bit of Cockroach Cluster if I told him they were peanuts?”
Ron in Prisoner of Azkaban – Chapter 1
Now I know what you’re going to think: cockroaches are disgusting! But in the world of magic they’re synonymous for super tasty treats.
In the Harry Potter universe, Cockroach Clusters are sold at Honeydukes: the legendary wizarding sweets shop. Believe it or not, they’re (allegedly) made from real cockroaches!
But in our magical kitchen I cannot allow cooking with something as nasty as cockroaches. There are other ways to get that crunchy texture.
All you need is a cup full of mixed nuts and dried fruit – plus some chocolate of course. Here’s the full recipe:

Harry Potter's Cockroach Clusters
Ingredients
- 5.5 oz milk chocolate chips 1/2 a pack, 150 grams
- 5 .5 oz dark chocolate chips 1/2 a pack, 150 grams
- 1 cup mixed nuts & dried fruit approx. 125 grams
Instructions
-
Chop the selection of nuts & dried fruit into bits, put them aside.
-
Place the chocolate chips into a microwave safe bowl. Set the microwave at 70% power for 60 seconds, take it out and stir the chocolate well.
-
Microwave again for additional 15 seconds at 70% power. Then stir until chocolate has completely melted.
-
Now add chopped nuts & dried fruit to the chocolate bowl, mix it well.
Take spoonfuls and drop them onto a serving plate lined with aluminium foil or even better - on a silicone mat.
-
Place in the refrigerator for 20 minutes until the chocolate sets.Store the cockroaches in a jar in a dry, cool place.
Fun fact
“Cockroach Clusters” is a password to Professor Dumbledore’s office.
